FREDERIKSHAVN: It came as a shock to most people when Frederikshavn Municipality, led by Mayor Birgit S. Hansen (S), announced in April that the municipality would take over ownership of Frederikshavn Port at short notice.

The reason was catastrophically poor finances in the port company, which was carrying a debt of 1.6 billion kroner and an operation that was not well-organized enough to pay off the debt.

The mayor claimed on that occasion that she had only become aware of the port's poor finances very late in the process.

But that cannot be right, believes Kurt Kildedal Jensen, a former Social Democratic mayor of the municipality and who sits on the finance committee.

He tells TV2 Nord that the municipality's finance manager prepared a confidential memo about the port's poor finances as early as January 2022. economy.

The note was presented in March of the same year.

- We all knew that this was alarming, and that it could go completely wrong. Which it has turned out to have done. It came as no surprise to me. Unfortunately, says Kurt Kirkedal Jensen to TV2 Nord.

Birgit S. Hansen will not comment on the note to TV2 Nord.

- I have no comments or observations on other people's statements as long as a legal investigation of the process is ongoing, she writes in a text message.

According to documents that TV2 Nord has seen, the municipality and the port worked together back in 2022 to save the economy. Among other things, an action plan was drawn up, which has not been implemented.

Birgit S. Hansen announced in March that she would not run again as mayor in the upcoming municipal elections. When she leaves at the end of 2025, she will have served as mayor for 24 years in the North Jutland municipality.
