Sydhavnens Motorværksted in Rønne is getting ready for even more wind in the Baltic Sea

The Bornholm company is moving closer to larger tasks within offshore wind with an expansion and part-ownership.

Although the summit on the expansion of offshore wind in the Baltic Sea ended at Marienborg instead of Hammershus, the future center of expansion is still on Bornholm. Since owner and CEO of Sydhavnens Motorværksted Claus Andersen last year ended his work as a subcontractor on Kriegers Flak for Siemens Gamesa, there has been hard and focused work on winning larger assignments.

- We finished building Kriegers Flak, but we have not reached full compliance to be able to get larger assignments. We can only be considered for the larger assignments when we have the full ISO certifications. That is, 9001, 14001 and 45000, which are quality management, occupational health and environment, says Claus Andersen, who is working towards the important certifications for work within the wind industry.

Bornholm's central location is an optimal starting point for becoming the entire Baltic Sea's hub for shipping. The location is also helped by the fact that the Port of Rønne has been expanded to handle future shipments of offshore wind.

- We can see that next year's projects will originate from Bornholm, and this is likely to apply all the way to Gotland. In the wind turbine industry, we are not allowed to do anything without certificates, and that is why we have started the process through Business Center Bornholm, says Claus Andersen, who is so far along in the certification work that he has three offers from three certification providers on his desk.

However, the work towards the certifications had already begun earlier.

- We already have internal quality management, so the preparatory work was done. Business Center Bornholm has helped find the right people, explains Claus Andersen about an ongoing process.

Co-owner of Task Engineering Bornholm

It is a certification that will initially go through Task Engineering Bornholm, which is an offshoot of Task Engineering GmbH in Stralsund, Germany. The German company has the Dane Stefan Lindberg as managing director, so the Danish part of the company was a natural fit for several reasons.

- Stefan Lindberg and I actually grew up four houses apart, and today we own a third of Task Engineering Bornholm. This is where we will roll out the ISO certifications before they come to Sydhavnens Motorværksted, says Claus Andersen.

With the new company, it will be possible to take on much larger tasks, because Task Engineering Bornholm can draw on labor from Germany and a Polish company in addition to Sydhavnens Motorværksted.

- We would like to be prequalified, so that we can be a part of what will happen on site. We have the opportunity to be that way with the certifications, says Claus Andersen.

The collaboration has already paid off, as the surface treatment on a monopile for Arcardis Ost required post-treatment at the shipping site at Rønne Port.

For the task, the surface treatment company in Düsseldorf sent ten employees to Rønne, where the 107-meter-long and 2,000-ton monopile was to be post-treated. Here Task Engineering Bornholm approached with local help, and it ended up being a good collaboration.

- We contacted the company and asked if they needed help, and they did. Ten men came in their work clothes, and we took care of the rest. We arranged for overnight stays, and it is not easy in the summer on Bornholm to get toilet carts, compressors and other tools, explains Claus Andersen about the first successful assignment for Task Engineering Bornholm.

Subsequently, Claus Andersen and Stefan Lindberg have even visited the German surface treatment company in Düsseldorf, so the contact for more work has already been established. On the same trip, companies in Duisburg and Rotterdam were also visited as part of bringing more work to Bornholm.

Opening in Nexø

But it doesn't stop there for Sydhavnens Motorværksted, because the expansion of offshore wind will mean increased activity from Nexø Port.

- We have made an agreement to open in Nexø Port. It is a large hall where we have the opportunity to make repairs on CTVs indoors, where there is access to a lift. I believe there will be a lot of work. Business Bornholm has just been on a trip to Grimsby in England. Here, five GW of offshore wind has meant 500 jobs onshore. Here we already know that three GW will come, so the expectation can be up to 300 permanent jobs onshore. There are great opportunities for Bornholm as a hub, says Claus Andersen.

The collaboration with Stefan Lindberg has also brought another interesting task to the door. Lindberg has a past in the shipping industry at Maersk, which is why he has landed the task of installing an electricity-producing rotor on a newly built coaster.

- It's kind of funny that we can get such a task of installing the rotor in the bow here to Bornholm. We would like to do a lot more of that, and we have the crew for the job and the equipment for it, says Claus Andersen.
