A new partnership in the form of the commercial fund "Baltic Energy Island" has seen the light of day. The goal is to create a hub for innovation and development of technologies that will impact the energy system in the Baltic Sea and globally, Energinet said in a statement.
The state-owned company, together with Ørsted, Siemens-Gamesa, DTU, Bornholm Regional Municipality, Bornholm Energy & Supply and Rønne Port, are the originators behind the new initiative.
The Baltic Sea holds great untapped potential for both green transition and Danish business. With Bornholm as an energy island and business lighthouse, we create the opportunity to collaborate on innovation and development of green energy technologies that will work on the global market. The establishment of the Baltic Energy Island commercial fund is the first step in this development, says Ulrik Stridbæk, Head of Energy Economics at Ørsted.
Specifically, the partners in Baltic Energy Island will work within several main areas - including developing the Baltic Sea as a center for offshore wind and green transport hub - and using Bornholm as a test island for green energy. The partners will establish test opportunities and develop technologies for energy islands and Power-to-X.
Another main area is the education of engineers and training of companies so that they can become part of the green transition - and the story of Bornholm's transition; all with the aim of helping other regions and countries transform their energy systems and societies.
In addition, a growth and innovation house will be established, where learning from testing and development is used in collaborations between students and the business community with the aim of creating innovative and green business models.
- The technical, market and regulatory innovations needed to make energy islands successful require massive collaboration between experts, companies, authorities, citizens and many more. With Baltic Energy Island, we will have a place where they can meet. It is absolutely necessary, and at Energinet we look forward to being involved, says Hanne Storm Edlefsen, Deputy Director for Energy Islands at Energinet.
The Baltic Energy Island partnership was formed on the basis of the project 'National Center for Green Energy', which was established with support from the Danish Business Development Agency, the European Social Fund and the European Regional Development Fund in 2021.
