BORNHOLM: - It was a pretty big deal for Bornholm that the whole world's focus was on Bornholm. I can't remember the last time Bornholm had such a historic summit, says the island's conservative mayor Jacob Trøst to Ritzau.
It was a work stoppage at Bornholm Airport, which made it difficult to transport the summit guests to Bornholm. This has led to the summit being moved away from the island. The meeting has instead been moved to the Prime Minister's official residence, Marienborg, north of Copenhagen.
On Monday afternoon, the employees at the airport resumed work after the Labour Court gave them notice of just that.
According to the plan, two energy islands are to be completed in 2030. One of them is on Bornholm. An offshore wind farm is being established in the waters southwest of Bornholm, which will be connected to a facility on the rocky island. That is also why the mayor can feel that people on Bornholm are disappointed that the meeting is being moved.
- We had really looked forward to it becoming more visible what Bornholm can do and what we are heading towards. So it is extra frustrating that it is then cancelled, says Jacob Trøst.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) is hosting an energy summit for the countries in the Baltic Sea region. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is also participating.
- Bornholm has been involved in the work of green transition for many years, and this was a milestone that is being marked, says Jacob Trøst.
Although the mayor is disappointed, he adds:
- I don't want to blame anyone, especially because it is a situation that is out of our hands, and I can't get involved in a conflict. I can only say that it is really annoying and really frustrating, says Jacob Trøst.
The mayor's statements came shortly before the employees at Bornholm Airport decided to resume work on Monday afternoon.
