It will be an experienced consultant who will help prepare Ørsted and ATP's joint bid for Denmark's future energy island called 'North Sea Energy Island'. Thus, the partners have pointed to the consulting company Arup as the lead consultant on their project. Arup has been at the forefront of several major projects in Denmark, including the Øresund Bridge and the Fehmarnbelt, as well as the new Metro Cityringen in Copenhagen.
In addition, ATP and Ørsted highlight Arup's extensive experience in delivering offshore wind projects all over the world as decisive for the choice of consultant.
- The North Sea Energy Island will be one of the most important and complex infrastructure projects in Denmark. In collaboration with Arup and our partners, we are convinced that we can deliver a future-proof project that will be a cornerstone in the Danish and European green transition in the coming decades. We believe that the energy island should be synonymous with innovation and sustainability, and have gathered a number of strong partners who can help us realize these ambitions, says Søren Scherfig, head of the North Sea Energy Island project at Ørsted.
Based on a modular design, Ørsted and ATP want to make the North Sea Energy Island a groundbreaking project that redefines Europe's journey towards sustainable energy production.
- Arup has for some time supported Ørsted + ATP in their work to create a vision for a functional artificial island that can be a driving force for a lot of good changes. We are proud to be part of a project that can redefine the future of a greener Europe that transitions away from fossil fuels and towards sustainable energy sources. Our in-depth knowledge of recycling projects combined with our local expertise in delivering infrastructure projects such as Cityringen make Arup a fantastic partner in the North Sea Energy Island, says Christian Allison, Head of Arup's Copenhagen office.
Ørsted and ATP's bid is one of two partnerships that have so far expressed interest in bidding for the task of establishing the energy island in the North Sea. Copenhagen Industri Partners (CIP), PensionDanmark, PFA and Andel have also previously presented their bids called "VindØ".
The energy island in the North Sea is expected to be operational in 2033 and will have a capacity of at least three GW.
