Ørsted and Amazon enter into historic agreement

Amazon has entered into a ten-year agreement with Ørsted to purchase 250 MW of capacity from Ørsted's planned offshore wind farm Borkum Riffgrund 3. The agreement is Europe's largest power purchase agreement within offshore wind.

Ørsted and Amazon enter into a historically large power purchase agreement (CPPA). The agreement entails that Amazon will purchase 250 MW of the total capacity from Ørsted's planned 900 MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm in Germany, the wind farm is expected to be completed in 2025.

- This agreement demonstrates that Ørsted is well equipped to help companies with green ambitions act on the global climate challenge, says Rasmus Erboe, Senior Vice President, Regional Director for Continental Europe at Ørsted Offshore and responsible for CPPAs.

With its size of 250 MW, the CPPA is Europe's largest within renewable energy. The agreement with Amazon means that Ørsted has signed CPPAs with a total capacity of 1,301 MW across its global offshore wind portfolio in the past 12 months.

For Amazon, the agreement will contribute to achieving a goal of being 100 percent supplied with renewable energy by 2030, and it is also part of the path towards the company's goal of being CO2-neutral by 2040.

- We are proud to collaborate with Ørsted on Amazon's first CPPA in offshore wind, which is Europe's largest with its capacity of 250MW of renewable energy, says Nat Sahlstrom, Director of Amazon Energy

This is the second major agreement that Ørsted has signed with Amazon. The first was signed in 2016 and was for 253 MW for the Amazon Onshore Wind Farm Texas.

Ørsted has yet to make the final investment decision on Borkum Riffgrund 3, but it is expected to be made at the end of 2021.
