It will be difficult to reach agreement on a new 2040 climate target for the EU, but Denmark will try to get it in place during the EU presidency. This is what Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) says at a press conference in the EU Parliament.
- There are many things on the table right now, and some colleagues forget that one of our most important goals should be to combat climate change. But we will try, says Mette Frederiksen.
Denmark is aiming to get the 2040 climate target in place at a ministerial meeting on September 18. In addition, Denmark's EU Commissioner, Dan Jørgensen, together with the Danish EU Presidency, will push for a farewell to Russian oil and gas.
- The 2040 climate target is important, but it is also important that we become free of Russian oil and gas, says Mette Frederiksen.
She points out that a farewell to Russian fossil energy will not only benefit the climate, but also help Ukraine, because European countries will then no longer pay Russia for energy.
