After more than three hours of festive dinner and open bar, it can be difficult to break through the sound barrier, but 3F chairman Henning Overgaard knows both his city and the dockworkers in Esbjerg, and he quickly created a buzz when he stepped on stage. The 1944 Landing Club at Esbjerg Havn, as the dockworkers' club is called in Esbjerg, has celebrated its 80th anniversary.
- Shut up while I'm talking, Henning Overgaard said, as the very back rows of the packed party tent were in a festive mood. Calm came, and the atmosphere was exactly as good as before the call.
- The community was formed in the very last year of the occupation, and it has been like that ever since, said Henning Overgaard, who also appreciated that it had happened together with the employers, who were also at the party.
The awareness that good wages and working conditions require a healthy business is fully present.
- I think that we have always ensured that there is a commercial basis for the companies, said Henning Overgaard, before he came up with a clear and distinct political message:
- Dear dockworkers, you have experienced an increasing retirement age, and we must fight against an increasing retirement age.
The club creates the community
Henning Overgaard also wanted to give his perspective on what the dockworkers' club has meant to DOI.dk.
- The club creates unity and community. It is a story that is worth delving into 80 years later. If I think back to when I was a boy, when it was a fishing port, the changes first came to oil and gas in a very short time. Now it is wind, explains Henning Overgaard.
The dockworkers have been involved all the way through, and they have followed the development.
- The transition here at the port has only been possible because the dockworkers have the right skills. The club is a community within the union that helps to ensure those skills, explains Henning Overgaard.
He also makes no secret of the fact that skills development is done jointly with the business owners.
- It is also a very strong community between the businesses and the club. This gives companies the opportunity to compete so that their projects generate the profit they need, even though there are opposing interests, says Henning Overgaard.
It is no secret that the dock workers in Esbjerg are well-paid. It did not come about by itself.
- We must have a fair share of the profit, and it is a daily struggle. But as I said, it is about having the right skills and having a balance in the agreements, says Henning Overgaard, who points out one thing:
- It has been 20 years since the dock workers started training, and they have done well in that.
