BORNHOM: A new collaboration between the Port of Rønne and the energy technology company Stillstrom will investigate the possibility of establishing both shore power and offshore charging of electric vehicles in connection with Energiø Bornholm, which could give a decisive boost to Molslinjen's efforts to introduce battery-powered ferries, writes TV2 Bornholm.
Molslinjen has previously invested billions in two new catamaran ferries and associated infrastructure, which sail between Zealand and Jutland. However, there are practical challenges in relation to the infrastructure at the Port of Rønne for Molslinjen, which also operates the ferry service from Bornholm, to introduce battery-powered catamaran ferries.
However, if Energiø Bornholm is realized, there will be a number of new opportunities with the large amount of electricity that will be produced, which may be used to charge the battery-powered ferries. The Port of Rønne and Stillstrom expect to publish a report in the first quarter of 2026 with the results of the collaboration.
