In 2024, EUDP has awarded 631 million DKK to 77 new energy projects that are intended to accelerate the development of innovative technologies. This is stated in the program's recently published annual report. The Danish Energy Agency writes this in a press release.
Among the supported projects are an ammonia-powered ship engine, a battery technology based on coffee grounds and an intelligent traffic management system that reduces energy consumption in urban traffic. Overall, support has been given to a wide range of technologies, including energy efficiency, wind power and Power-to-X.
Where the year before there was greater dispersion in technology areas, in 2024 there are certain areas that receive relatively large shares of the subsidy kroner - and some technology areas that are completely absent. The technology areas of energy efficiency and wind power received the largest pieces of the pie in 2024.
- We are seeing a large increase in the number of promising projects. And they range widely – from smart robots, energy efficiency and flexible electricity use to green shipping and Power-to-X technologies. This is evidence of a strong innovation environment in Denmark, where researchers and companies are working purposefully to bring the innovative energy technologies of the future from the laboratories to the market, says Kim Lehmann, chair of the EUDP board.
New strategy
EUDP has also revised its strategy for the period 2024-2027 with a focus on electrification and sector coupling. At the same time, a new application round has been opened, with DKK 300 million allocated for new projects. The new strategy focuses on seven key areas that will support Denmark's energy and climate goals: "Green electricity", "Sustainable biomass, biogas and pyrolysis", "Energy efficiency", "Power-to-X", "Heat and heat storage", "Flexible electricity use and digitalization" and CO2 capture, utilization and storage.
- EUDP's strategy will ensure that we continue to support the most promising technologies, while maintaining a technology-neutral approach. We must both help optimize and mature existing technologies and support the development of completely new solutions of the future, says Kim Lehmann.
According to the Danish Energy Agency, the annual report for 2024 emphasizes that EUDP support continues to make a significant difference for green innovation and for Danish growth and employment.
- The green transition is a long-term process, but we clearly see that the solutions we have invested in contribute to reducing CO2 emissions, increasing security of supply and creating new Danish jobs. We look forward to continuing the work in 2025, concludes Kim Lehmann.
