MIDDELFART: Mayor Johannes Lundsfryd (S) and regional council chairman Stephanie Lose (V) welcomed this year's Climate People's Meeting in Middelfart.

- It requires knowledge if you want to do something better. That's the best thing about a people's meeting like this, where we can see and gain insight into what opportunities there are to do more for our climate, says Johannes Lundsfryd, mayor of Middelfart Municipality.

He highlights the extreme weather this year with floods in Norway, storms in Italy and an extraordinarily wet July here at home as events that bring the climate crisis further into everyone's consciousness.

- The climate challenges around us are one of the greatest challenges of our time for our society. The extreme weather reminds us of the challenges we have and the extent of the climate crisis, he says.

He concludes by highlighting the Climate People's Meeting's ambition to provide space for professional knowledge sharing and debates, so that both private individuals, companies and local communities can take inspiration home.

The Danes take climate seriously

Stephanie Lose highlights how much the event has grown in the past five years, and that they expect to break the attendance record with 30,000 participants over the three days. In addition, there is also a new record for the number of events with 400 events distributed across 12 stages and 175 different organizers.

- In the run-up to this year's Climate People's Meeting, the Region of Southern Denmark conducted a national opinion poll with 2,000 Danes, where a large proportion saw the climate challenges as the greatest challenge for our society. Many want more to happen from a political perspective, but a large proportion also believe that everyone has a personal responsibility to contribute to solutions, she says.

Here she points out that not everyone will change their holiday habits, transport habits or food habits for the climate, for example, but that the Climate People's Meeting can be a forum for inspiration for what can be done both on a large and small scale.

From local to national

The Climate People's Meeting lasts three days and has various talks, debates and events with a focus on climate.

It is free for everyone to participate, and since 2019, Middelfart Municipality and the Region of Southern Denmark have collaborated to make the event go from being local to being a national event.

Last year, the event reached its previous record with 21,000 visitors. This year, the meeting will be held from August 31 to September 2 at KulturØpladsen in Middelfart.
