Energinet has been granted an environmental permit to build the stations for Energiø Bornholm and the Danish cable connection between Bornholm and Zealand. The permit determines how the construction work and subsequent operation must be carried out with regard to people, nature and the environment.
The environmental permit, the so-called Section 25 permit, is the result of a longer process, in which citizens, landowners, municipalities and interest groups have had the opportunity to provide input to the project's environmental assessment. The assessment has been in public hearings from 2022 to 2025 and has included both the construction phase and the operation of the facilities. Along the way, the Danish Agency for Green Land Redevelopment and Aquatic Environment and Energinet have held citizen meetings on Bornholm and Zealand.
- Energiø Bornholm is a large project that can have an impact on many people - both on Bornholm and Zealand. I would like to thank everyone who has shared their experiences, concerns and ideas. This means that we have gained more perspectives on the environmental impacts and a better basis for carrying out the work responsibly and with the greatest possible consideration, says Marian Kaagh, Vice President for Environment and Rights at Energinet, in a press release.
The environmental assessment covers, among other things, the impact on the landscape, nature, biodiversity, noise and human health. According to the assessment, there is a need for various mitigation measures, including measures to reduce the impact on the landscape and protect nature, including through the establishment of water holes and the installation of toad fences. Any noise nuisance for neighbors must be handled with noise-reducing measures.
Still some time until construction starts
Even though the environmental permit has now been granted, it will still be some time before the actual construction work can begin. Before then, tenders, agreements with landowners as well as detailed planning and technical studies in accordance with the terms of the permit are still missing.
The first major construction activity is expected in spring 2026 at Hedehusene on Zealand, where Energinet plans to establish AC Station Lindehøj, a new 400 kV high-voltage substation. On Bornholm at Aakirkeby, construction work is expected to start during 2027. The entire Energiø Bornholm project is expected to be commissioned in 2036.
