Electricity consumption in Eastern Denmark reached a new level in the first quarter of 2026. New figures show that never before has so much electricity been used in the area, where the grid companies Cerius and Radius supply electricity to over 1.5 million customers.
This is stated by Cerius-Radius in a press release.
According to the grid companies, electricity consumption in the first three months of the year was approximately 15 percent above the previous record from 2025. The development is due, among other things, to more connections to the electricity grid and cold winter months, where heating accounts for a large part of consumption.
- We have been talking for a while that the electrification of society was gaining momentum, but in the first months of the year we have witnessed a quantum leap in consumption. This is due, among other things, to the fact that many new customers have been connected to the electricity grid. Another part of the explanation is the very cold temperatures in January and February, as heating accounts for a large part of the total electricity consumption in the coldest months of the year, says Cäthe Bay-Smidt, Head of Grid Economy & Compliance at Cerius-Radius.
In January and February, the previous daily record for electricity consumption from 2024 was surpassed in 20 days. The grid companies expect that the records can be broken again if future winters offer similarly low temperatures.
At the same time, Cerius-Radius points out that the demand for electricity will continue to increase as companies switch from natural gas to electricity and more households invest in electric cars and heat pumps. This places increased demands on the capacity of the electricity grid, which is continuously being expanded to keep up with developments.
