The Port of Hirtshals has made a lot of headlines recently. In February, it emerged that the Port of Hirtshals had brought in its new development manager, Steen Hardin Hintze, from competitors at the Port of Hanstholm.
Shortly afterwards, it emerged that the Port of Hirtshals had dismissed both CEO Jens Kirketerp Jensen and Deputy CEO Karin Eilers before Christmas, but without announcing it.
The dismissal came as a bit of a surprise to Jens Kirketerp Jensen, and several citizens and politicians expressed concern that the dismissal could be politically motivated.
However, those accusations have been rejected. Instead, the dismissal comes on the basis of an external consultancy study that the port had initiated at the end of 2020. The study was to assess whether the port in its current form was equipped for the challenges and development opportunities that it faces in the coming years.
Now the chairman of the Port of Hirtshals is revealing what the development plans will consist of. The plans will be presented to Hjørring City Council next week, which will include a port expansion of approximately one billion kroner, writes Nordjyske.
- So far, we have kept our cards very close to our bodies, and this is due to the fierce competition between the ports. That is why we have chosen to represent the interests of the port, but now we are very far along with visions and plans, says chairman of the Port of Hirtshals, Anker Laden-Andersen to Nordjyske.
The plans include a new design of the entrance to the port, and the port will make green fuels available to the ships that will dock. The Port of Hirtshals will therefore invest heavily in, among other things, ammonia and hydrogen, which will be produced through Power-to-X with electricity from the port's four wind turbines.
The newly appointed development director Steen Hardin Hintze has previously had experience with Power-to-X through his time at the helm of the Energy Foundation Skive, where he was one of the driving forces behind the establishment of GreenLab Skive.
Based on the consultant study and the upcoming development plans, it was concluded that Jens Kirketerp Jensen and Karin Eilers were not the right people to implement the development plans.
