AARHUS: The Port of Aarhus, Denmark's largest industrial port, is to be expanded by 43 hectares. A majority of the municipality's city council agreed on Wednesday, writes Århus Stiftstidende.

The proposal to expand the port has received criticism from several sides - including for ruining the view and harming both the climate and the environment. The area is equivalent to 60 football fields.

The agreement is somewhat less extensive than the originally proposed expansion of 105 hectares. However, a further expansion may later be discussed, according to the newspaper.

- Overall, we have made a sustainable and balanced agreement on an expansion, says the mayor of Aarhus Municipality Jacob Bundsgaard (S) according to Århus Stiftstidende.

He believes that the agreement addresses many of the concerns that have been raised.

The castle can be seen from Mols

According to the Liberal Party, it is possible as a result of the agreement to see from Mols to Marselisborg Castle in southern Aarhus. This is what political leader and councilor Christian Budde (V) says to TV 2 Østjylland.

- In the Liberal Party, we are first and foremost happy that we have managed to take care of the unique view over the bay, which we know attracts an incredible number of Aarhusians, he says.

The agreement has been signed by the Social Democrats, the Conservatives, the Liberal Party and the Socialist Party. The port expansion has created a lot of debate. Last year, several parties in the city council proposed sending the proposal to a referendum.

The expansion will establish a new outer pier, which is expected to be completed in 2030. The entire package of measures is expected to be ready in 2039, according to Århus Stiftstidende.

SF is satisfied that the expansion will be smaller than planned.

- For us, it has been important for the first time in the city's history to ensure that a new large construction project does not create climate debt, says Liv Gro Jensen (SF) in a statement.

The parties have also decided that sediment dredging must be avoided. This also means that the Port of Aarhus's original application for dredging at Fløjstrup must be dropped.
