In 2023, 22,546 excavation damages were registered in Denmark, which entails socio-economic costs of 1.24 billion DKK. This is stated by the Danish Climate Data Agency in a press release.

- It has great costs for society when pipelines are dug over. Therefore, we must also look at how we can reduce the number of excavation damages. The Pipeline Owners' Register plays a central role here, says CEO of the Danish Climate Data Agency Rikke Hougaard Zeberg.

The Pipeline Owners' Register, which the Danish Climate Data Agency operates, was fully digitalized in 2023, and work is now beginning to modernize the entire system.

- We are now starting work on finding out how to modernize the Pipeline Owners' Register, while at the same time working with excavation actors and pipeline owners to find out how we can use it even better together so that we can reduce the number of excavation damages. In this regard, it may turn out that we need more levers, says Rikke Hougaard Zeberg.

Increasing excavation activity has led to more excavation damage, but the analysis also shows that the Danish supply sector is robust and able to redirect supply in the event of damage. Nevertheless, excavation damage results in annual derived costs of 161 million DKK for private households and companies.
