Global engineering and construction company Acciona and Ørsted have agreed to enter into a strategic partnership. The partnership will combine Acciona's innovative foundation solutions for floating offshore wind and Ørsted's expertise in offshore wind to drive the commercialization of floating offshore wind, the parties said in a statement.

As part of the MoU, the companies will collaborate to reduce the environmental impact and price of electricity from floating offshore wind, industrialize the production of concrete foundations and establish a European supply chain to support Ørsted's portfolio of floating offshore wind development projects in Europe.

By the mid-2030s, more than 20 percent of new offshore wind farms are expected to be on floating foundations. Ørsted will continuously take steps to commercialize floating offshore wind technology, for example with the Salamander project in Scotland.

- The goal of our collaboration with Acciona is to move floating offshore wind from the innovation to industrialization stage. We want to expand our European pipeline of floating offshore wind projects with Spain as an important market. Advancing floating offshore wind technology and bringing it to market is a strategic goal of Ørsted's floating offshore wind program, and we are doing this by entering into partnerships with the supply chain, says Rasmus Errboe, Executive Vice President and Regional Director for Europe at Ørsted.

A central element of the agreement between Ørsted and Acciona will be to explore the use of CO2-neutral materials such as biocement and bioconcrete and other materials and solutions that support Ørsted and Acciona's goals for biodiversity and CO2 reduction.

- The collaboration with Acciona will help us take the next step towards realizing the potential of floating offshore wind at scale in Europe: to innovate, invest in the supply chain and reduce costs, while reducing CO2 emissions. This is exactly what Ørsted has already done with fixed offshore wind, and we will do it again with floating offshore wind, says Gabriel Davies, who heads Ørsted's floating offshore wind program.
