Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard has this week officially approved an investment of 12.5 billion DKK for a comprehensive renewal and expansion of the electricity grid between Trige near Aarhus and Kassø near Aabenraa. The project is intended to prepare the electricity infrastructure to handle larger amounts of green electricity and growing electricity consumption in East and South Jutland. This is stated by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities.

It is Energinet that assesses where to invest in the electricity grid, and they are also responsible for the project, which, among other things, will result in 270 kilometers of buried cables replacing old electricity pylons, several stations being expanded, and 190 kilometers of new overhead lines being established.

Back in 2022, the then Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities approved two applications for a comprehensive reinvestment of the connection from Kassø to Trige. Energinet has since assessed that there is a need for further expansion and reinforcement, and the project has now received final approval and financing.

According to the minister, the current infrastructure is obsolete in several places and is standing in the way of the expansion of green energy. The investment is to ensure that the electricity grid can transport electricity from wind and solar to both consumers and exports.

- Today, the electricity grid has reached its limit in several places and is, in short, about to have served its military service. This must of course be resolved. There is potentially much more renewable energy on the way to the area, and it is not possible for an obsolete or inadequate electricity grid to become a barrier to more green electricity. Therefore, the investment that is coming now is absolutely necessary and green action that works, says Lars Aagaard.

The project is part of a broad political agreement from December 2024 on faster expansion of the electricity grid. It also includes the expansion of five existing stations, four of which will be moved to new locations. The work is expected to start in 2028, and the electricity grid is scheduled to be put into use in 2032. The old overhead lines will be removed no later than 2036.
