Space is one of the things that Port Director Mogens Pedersen must find solutions for. Here he identifies an area where there is nature that must also be taken into account.

White Sands Harbor :
Port Director: We are making ourselves attractive for offshore wind

Offshore wind is the new player in Hvide Sande, where a balance must be struck between nature, tourism and traditional port industries such as fishing and the maritime industry and crafts.

Mogens Pedersen began his position as port director in March, and there is already a focus point that he is particularly focused on.

- The biggest task right now is the tender for the three offshore wind farms Nordsøen 1, 2 and 3, and we are doing what we can to make ourselves attractive to energy companies. Here I am thinking of the possibilities of becoming a support port in the construction phase and a service port later. The farms will be located here 20 km off the coast, says Mogens Pedersen.

However, Hvide Sande's possibilities are limited by several factors, all of which must be taken into account during the planning process.

- Last year, an area management plan was decided on, which we are adapting to. We have 80,000 sq m. of potential, part of which is currently a nature conservation area. That's why I'm in dialogue with both the municipality and the nature conservation association, because we have few development opportunities here, says Mogens Pedersen, who this year had to shelve a future plan for the benefit of the wind turbine industry:

- In the spring, we had a discussion at an information meeting about whether we should have a heliport here in town for offshore wind. There was no enthusiasm for that in the town or at the tourist association.

However, a workable solution was found for the need for a heliport.

- Stauning was chosen as the location for a heliport, and it is the second best solution, says Mogens Pedersen about a location near the town of Stauning on the inside of Ringkøbing Fjord, where there is already a small airport.

The concern about offshore wind

Hvide Sande is so characterized by a large industry.

- Tourism means the most to Hvide Sande. We are trying to develop tourism at the port in a balanced way, so that there are places for both tourists and traditional port businesses, says Mogens Pedersen.

However, there are also synergy effects between businesses, this applies to both fishing, but now also to offshore wind turbines.

- Now there are safari trips out to the North Sea South – and for citizens, offshore wind turbines are not a concern. For fishermen, it is different. This is because these are areas that have traditionally been good fishing areas.

Vattenfall also has its service center for the North and South Seas in the city. The appearance of Vattenfall's service center does not arouse wild enthusiasm in Hvide Sande, which is also not the case with a largely identical service center for Denmark's largest wind farm Kriegers Flak in Klintholm Havn on eastern Møn.

- It is an industrial building that is looked down upon here in town. At the same time, there is also concern about whether the wind industry will dominate too much, says the port director.

Recruitment

However, there is a concern that all industries feel.

- Recruitment is the big problem. It is a challenge for established companies, and more and more workers are coming from abroad, says Mogens Pedersen and notes another trend:

- But there are also newcomers who want to get away from the noise of the city. They are attracted by the sea and the wind.

And there is also a special West Jutland characteristic that should be highlighted in Hvide Sande.

- It is not just a toast. People here are not afraid to give it a go, and people really help each other here, says Mogens Pedersen, who is clearly both proud and enthusiastic about both the port and the city of Hvide Sande.
