The EU plans to expand and significantly increase tariffs on steel imports from abroad,
This was stated by Industry Commissioner Stéphane Séjourné at a meeting in Brussels on Wednesday. The AFP news agency reports.
The new measures will be presented on Tuesday next week and are intended to protect the European steel industry. They will replace the current rules for steel imports, which expire next year, it says.
An unnamed source with knowledge of the details previously told the Reuters news agency that the plan is to cut sharply the quota for steel imports.
It will be almost halved.
If more than the quota is imported, a tariff of 50 percent will be imposed on the steel, the source added.
This corresponds to the tariff rate on steel in the United States and Canada.
