Extreme summer heat sends electricity prices skyrocketing Tuesday evening

Extreme temperatures in Europe are sending electricity prices up, and customers in Denmark will feel it on Tuesday.

The beginning of the summer holidays has brought rising temperatures, and the electricity price is moving in the same direction. On Tuesday evening, the electricity price in Denmark will reach its second highest level this year, according to the energy group Norlys. This is due to the summery temperature in Denmark and especially in Southern Europe, which has been hit by extreme heat.

- There is a heat wave in Europe, and therefore the countries are using a lot of electricity to cool down. During the day, a lot of electricity is produced, but when the sun goes down, the heat lingers, says Mads Brøgger, director of Norlys' energy business.

From 8 to 9 p.m., the total electricity price on Tuesday will hit around six kroner per kilowatt-hour, which is among the highest for all of 2025. In the morning hours, the price will be between one and a half and two kroner per kilowatt-hour.

Both Spain and Portugal have registered record high temperatures for June. On Saturday, 46 degrees were measured in the town of El Granado in the province of Huelva in southwestern Spain. The high temperatures south of Denmark therefore have a hand in the game for the electricity price in Denmark.

- We are a coherent energy system in Europe, and we are for better or worse. That is generally good, but when it is really hot, it has an impact on the electricity price in Denmark, says Mads Brøgger.

Tuesday's high electricity price applies to both the eastern and western parts of the country, he emphasizes.

When the sun is high in the sky in the middle of the day, enough electricity is produced to keep the price down. When evening falls and the sun sets, the production of solar energy decreases. But the heat persists, and then the electricity price rises considerably. Therefore, as a consumer, you can save money by planning your electricity consumption during the summer heat.

- During Tuesday, the price will almost triple. So it means a lot if you can move the charging of the electric car or generally use electricity outside the period with the highest electricity price, says the Norlys director.
