In 2024, we handled more general cargo for the green transition, partly as a result of several companies at the port being suppliers to some of the world's largest offshore wind farms. And we expect this development to continue over the coming years, says CEO Kristian Thulensen Dahl about the development.

The green transition helps ensure greater freight turnover at Port of Aalborg

The Port of Aalborg experienced a significant increase in cargo turnover in 2024, with the volume of cargo increasing by almost 20 percent. The increase is due, among other things, to more exports of wind turbine components, grain and building materials.

The cargo turnover via the Port of Aalborg reached 2.5 million tons in 2024 against 2.1 million tons the year before. At the same time, the number of ship calls increased from 808 to 901, and the ships have generally become larger and can carry more cargo, the port states in a press release.

- It is very satisfactory that the number of ship calls is now increasing again and has increased by over 10 percent from 2023 to 2024, while the ships continue to get larger, says CEO of Port of Aalborg, Kristian Thulesen Dahl and continues:

- The green transition is a good example of the development, as, for example, components for the wind turbine industry are getting larger and larger. In 2024, we handled more general cargo for the green transition, partly as a result of several companies at the port being suppliers to some of the world's largest offshore wind farms. And we expect that this development will continue over the coming years.

The port also experienced growth in grain, animal feed and building materials, while imports of petrol and diesel fell, partly due to more electric cars. In addition, less goods were transported by rail at times due to track work between Aarhus and Aalborg.

Container traffic also grew in 2024, and already in October the number of containers handled exceeded the level from the whole of 2023. Aalborg Container Terminal, which the port has operated since 2023, is now economically viable.
