A new body will advise the EU Commission on technical issues for European electricity companies, and it will have a strong Danish imprint. Denmark has thus been given two seats on the 27-person board of the EU's new unit for DSOs (District System Operators), writes Dansk Energi.

- The DSO unit has an important agenda ahead of it, because the grid companies play a crucial role in the green transition, says Kristian Tilsted from Thy-Mors Energi Elnet, who is one of the two Danish voices in the new unit.

The other Danish member will be Jens Fossar Madsen from Cerius and Radius Elnet.

The DSO unit is divided into three groups, which are divided according to how many grid customers the DSO has. The groups are up to 100,000 grid customers, 100,000-1,000,000 and more than one million grid customers.

Kristian Tilsted has been elected to the first group, but Jens Fossar Madsen has – with German help – been elected to the middle group. Jens Fossar Madsen otherwise represents more than a million grid customers, but could not get a place in this group. With a little help from Germany, however, Jens Fossar Madsen manages to be elected to the middle group, which is why he officially only represents Cerius and thus just over 400,000 grid customers.

Jens Fossar Madsen points out that the distribution companies in Europe play an incredibly important role in relation to the electrification that is in full swing.

– That is why we must cooperate much more closely on the role of the electricity grids, and the interaction with the other market players on the development of markets for flexibility will be crucial for an effective green transition. We can do that with the new DSO unit, he says.

Strong Nordic voice

The DSO unit will provide technical advice to the EU Commission and ensure close and equal cooperation with the 42 TSOs that are organized in ENTSO-E and have Energinet as a Danish member.

-  One of the overall rationales is a more holistic cooperation between TSOs and DSOs. The DSOs are central to the green transition, as they are responsible for integrating by far the largest share of renewable energy at the European level. In addition, the majority of electrification will take place via the electricity distribution grid, says Deputy CEO Anders Stouge from Dansk Energi.

It is also not only Denmark that has been given two seats on the board. Sweden and Finland have also secured two seats each, and the Nordic trio therefore has six of the 27 seats on the board, which helps to ensure a strong Nordic influence.

– With 2 Danish seats out of 27, we are de facto overrepresented, so it is a very satisfactory outcome of our alliance building across Europe, says Anders Stouge.
