CEO: Politicians must step up the green transition

Taiwan and the USA are moving forward with offshore wind - says Semco Maritime CEO Steen Brødbæk at the WindEurope Annual Event 2023 at the Bella Centre.

Even a wind fair won't stop the expansion of offshore wind, which is in full swing. It's just not happening in Denmark yet. That's according to Semco Maritime's CEO Steen Brødbæk. The company, headquartered in Esbjerg, is active in the green transition, including the delivery of substations that collect electricity from offshore wind farms before it is sent to land.

The CEO thinks it's time for Danish politicians to give a boost to the Danish expansion of offshore wind. The expansion of offshore wind in the North Sea is certain, but right now it's two other countries in the world that are causing the hustle and bustle at Semco Maritime.

- In Denmark, we can't keep up with the USA and Taiwan, where there is pressure from the governments, says Steen Brødbæk, who would like to see the same drive from Danish politicians. On Wednesday, he is expecting a visit from the Social Democratic climate, energy and supply spokesman Lea Wermelin, and the messages to the politician from the ruling party are already clear.

- It's about how we get more offshore wind, and how we support an environment that allows us to convert the ten GW of offshore wind that will come from the upcoming energy island, says Steen Brødbæk.

The need for political action

- If politicians don't support more, then everything will come to a standstill. Things are very closely linked, explains Steen Brødbæk.

He sees another bottleneck towards the 2030 target, which lies in recruitment.

- Where do we get the workforce and the young people who need to be trained or retrained for jobs within the green transition, says the CEO, who already notices on his own trade fair calendar that the USA is one of the two countries where the development is moving.

- I'm getting on a plane to Aalborg here at 2 p.m., where I'm going to meet with people from Virginia Wind. We're going to deliver three substations 2.4 GW in 2025, explains Steen Brødbæk, who will have dinner with Virginia Wind and spend an overnight stay in Aalborg before returning tomorrow to the WindEurope Annual Event 2023 in the Bella Centre to meet with the politician.
