Report: Expansion of Odense Port can ease capacity pressure and benefit the environment

An expansion of the Port of Odense is necessary to accommodate increasing demand. However, the expansion may have positive ripple effects, a new report from Kraka Economics estimates.

ODENSE: The demand for port areas in Odense currently exceeds capacity, and a new analysis shows how an expansion of the Port of Odense and the establishment of a new shipping lane could have both socio-economic and environmental consequences. This is stated by the Port of Odense in a press release.

The analysis is by Kraka Economics, which has received input from, among others, the Danish Society for Nature Conservation and a number of researchers. They are working with two scenarios: a smaller and a larger expansion. Both scenarios examine possible mitigation measures and consequences for the surrounding area and nature in Odense Fjord.

- It is important that any expansion is not only assessed based on needs and capacity expansion, but also on its impacts. That is why in our analyses we have placed emphasis on making visible the benefits to society, environmental effects and mitigation options, says Svend Torp Jespersen, Chief Economist at Kraka Economics.

The needs analysis shows that the lack of space for, among other things, offshore wind turbine production and growing ship sizes can threaten the development of the green industry. If the infrastructure does not keep up, Denmark risks losing investments and production abroad.

At the same time, the sustainability analysis highlights that a new shipping channel can be placed outside the Natura 2000 area, where the current shipping channel passes through. A new shipping channel can thus reduce the spread of heavy metals and be a better environmental choice than expanding the current shipping channel.

- We are very aware that we are located on Odense Fjord, which is a vulnerable natural area. We are also well aware that establishing a new shipping channel and expanding the port will affect the area. That is why we want to shed light on all sides — including how we can minimize the impact, says Carsten Aa, CEO of Odense Havn A/S.

- It is positive that the experts show that there can actually be benefits if things are done right. The decision must be made on the best possible basis, and the authorities must of course also conduct their own thorough investigations, he adds.

The Port of Odense is Denmark's largest commercial port measured in area and extends over 8.5 million m2. The port is home to more than 120 companies that employ 3,200 people.
