A 200-meter-high cable tower is the latest addition to NKT's high-voltage factory in Karlskrona, Sweden. The tower is part of the company's billion-dollar investments and will be used in the production of high-voltage cables for the energy transition in Europe.

Now the cable company has named the tower, which is the second tallest in the Nordic region. The tower has been named NKT Crown. The name reflects the historical heritage of the city name Karlskrona, which directly translates to Charles's Crown and refers to King Charles XI, the founder of Karlskrona in 1680. It was selected from over 600 proposals, NKT said in a statement.

- NKT Crown is an excellent name. The tower was built to meet the increasing demand for high-voltage cables driven by the transition to renewable energy. It now stands as a symbol crowning the significant investments in the factory, the positive development in Karlskrona and the energy transition. It has been inspiring to see the large participation of people who have suggested names for the tower, which is becoming a local monument to the city's ongoing development, says Claes Westerlind, CEO of NKT.

The tower is part of an overall expansion of the factory, which is intended to meet the increasing demand for high-voltage cables. According to the company, the name reflects both Karlskrona's historical roots and NKT's role in the green transition.

The new cable tower is the tallest of the three at the factory. It will be part of the production of submarine cables up to 640 kV, which can supply electricity to up to three million households. In April, the expansion was recognized as the first strategic net-zero project in the EU under the Net-Zero Industry Act.

The investment in the entire factory in Karlskrona amounts to 1.3 billion euros. The expansion is due to be completed in 2027 and will make the factory the world's largest producer of submarine cables.
