The Norwegian Ministry of Energy has awarded 57 new production licenses on the Norwegian Continental Shelf in the latest APA round. A total of 19 companies have been awarded shares in one or more licenses, which are distributed across areas in the North Sea, the Norwegian Sea and the Barents Sea. This is stated by the Norwegian Ministry of Energy in a press release.

Of the 57 production licenses, 31 are located in the North Sea, 21 in the Norwegian Sea and five in the Barents Sea. All licenses are linked to a binding work program, which is to ensure either maturation of the areas or return to the state as resource owner.

- Norway is Europe's most important energy supplier, but in a few years production will start to decline. Therefore, we need new projects that can slow the decline and deliver as much production as possible. Today we are offering 57 new production licenses to 19 companies. This is a significant contribution to ensuring continued activity in the oil and gas industry, which is important for jobs, value creation and Europe's energy security, says Terje Aasland, Minister of Energy in Norway.

Equinor Energy AS is the company that has received the most licenses with shares in 35 licenses, of which 17 are operatorships. Aker BP ASA follows with shares in 22 licenses and 12 operatorships, while DNO Norge AS has received shares in 17 licenses and has been appointed as operator on four of them. In total, 13 companies have been appointed as operators on one or more licenses. Equinor is taking a stand on the award of the licenses, which the company calls crucial for the future.

- Access to new areas is crucial to our ambition to maintain a high level of production and predictable energy supplies to Europe from the Norwegian continental shelf towards 2035. There is still a lot of energy left on the shelf, but we need new discoveries to stem the expected decline in production. Integrating oil and gas from new discoveries into existing infrastructure is a core task going forward, says Jez Averty, senior vice president for subsurface on the Norwegian Continental Shelf at Equinor.

The APA scheme was introduced in 2003 and is an annual licensing round that is intended to support exploration and exploitation of resources in mature areas on the Norwegian Continental Shelf before existing infrastructure is closed.
