Vattenfall begins seabed preparation for the North and South North Seas

Over the next two months, a ship with mounted shovels will move around 3,000 rocks from the seabed so that cables and foundations for the wind turbines can subsequently be installed.

Vattenfall, which is behind the construction of the offshore wind farms Vesterhav Nord and Syd, has just started work on preparing the seabed for the installation of cables and foundations. The company announced this in a press release.

- The start of the initial steps in the construction phase at sea is an important milestone for us. It means that the physical farms are just around the corner, says Mathilde Damsgaard, Project Director for Vesterhav Nord and Syd at Vattenfall.

Specifically, it is expected that a ship with large mounted forests will move approximately 3,000 stones from the seabed in the two areas where the offshore wind farms will be located over the next 50 days.

The stones that need to be removed will be moved as short a distance as possible, and will therefore remain within the areas where the two offshore wind farms will be located.

Less than 1 percent of the identified rocks may turn out to be debris instead – for example, scrap metal that has been lost from ships over time. If Vattenfall finds scrap on the seabed in the affected areas, it will be removed and handled in accordance with applicable rules and guidelines.

Vattenfall expects that the construction of the foundations for the 41 offshore wind turbines in total will begin in February 2023. During the spring and summer of 2023, cables and turbines will be installed, and by the end of 2023, Vesterhav Nord and Syd will be ready to supply electricity.
