An anchor that was missing from the oil tanker "Eagle S" suspected of sabotage has been found at the bottom of the Gulf of Finland. This was reported by the Finnish public service media YLE on Tuesday.

According to information provided to YLE, the anchor was located and recovered with the help of a Swedish special vessel. The anchor is currently seized by Finnish authorities.

An electrical cable and several data cables running in the Baltic Sea between Finland and Estonia were damaged on December 25. Finnish police suspect that the tanker "Eagle S", which sailed from St. Petersburg on the night of December 25, caused the damage. The suspicion is, among other things, gross sabotage. Previously, an almost 100-kilometer-long tow track was found on the seabed.

The ship has been in the custody of the Finnish authorities since December 26. "Eagle S", which is loaded with around 35,000 tonnes of unleaded petrol, is now anchored off the Finnish town of Porvoo, east of Helsinki.

It may remain there for quite some time while Finnish authorities carry out investigations. Magnus Winberg, an associate professor of navigation at the Aboa Mare educational institution, tells YLE that it may remain there all winter. This is because quite extensive investigations will have to be carried out.

Customs authorities believe that the ship, which is sailing under the flag of the Cook Islands, is part of Russia's so-called shadow fleet. The ships in the shadow fleet are believed to circumvent international sanctions against Russia by sailing with Russian goods without sailing under the Russian flag.

Following several cable breaks in the Baltic Sea, the Western military alliance NATO has said that it will increase its military presence in the Baltic Sea.
