Denmark and Germany ready with support ceiling of up to DKK 139 billion for the Energy Island of Bornholm

Denmark and Germany are willing to set a total support ceiling of up to 139 billion DKK to ensure the realization of the Bornholm Energy Island with three gigawatts of offshore wind south and southwest of the island. The government will therefore find 41.7 billion DKK in the political negotiations on the project. However, according to the government, this support ceiling is a worst-case scenario, and the expected amount of support from the Danish side ends up at around 23 billion DKK. The assessment is based, among other things, on the fact that Germany purchases the majority of the electricity and therefore covers 70 percent of the costs, while Denmark pays 30 percent. This is reported by DR.

The government maintains that a high support ceiling is necessary to reduce the risk for investors and thus effectively ensure lower bids for the establishment of the offshore wind turbines. At the same time, the government points out that the final bill depends on electricity prices in the coming decades and the development of electricity consumption in both Denmark and Germany. According to one of Denmark's leading experts on the deployment of offshore wind, Lena Kitzing, who is an associate professor and unit manager at the Technical University of Denmark, the high support ceiling is a way for the government to ensure better opportunities to implement the project at Bornholm.

- It is a good sign that they could agree on a high. It is too early to draw any conclusions about what the state will actually pay. It is not certain that it will end up being a net payment for taxpayers at all. It depends on the electricity price, she says.
