New guidance aims to strengthen municipalities' work with wind turbine noise

The Danish Environmental Protection Agency has issued new guidance on noise from wind turbines, which is intended to give municipalities a clearer basis for administration. The guidance is an interpretative contribution to the Wind Turbine Noise Ordinance and clarifies the parts of the regulations that often give rise to questions.

"The Wind Turbine Noise Ordinance covers both onshore and offshore wind turbines, and the ordinance's noise limits apply to the total noise from wind turbines regardless of their location. However, the majority of inquiries concern onshore wind turbines, which must be reported to the municipality, and where the municipality is the supervisory authority. The guidance is therefore primarily aimed at the municipalities' administration of wind turbines, but is also used when administering offshore wind turbines," the new guidance states.

The revision updates the guidance in relation to the latest wind turbine noise executive order, which came into force on 1 September 2024. The new guidance replaces guidance no. 51 from 2021 and can be found on the Danish Environmental Protection Agency's overview of guidance and executive orders.
