At the end of January, a historic milestone was reached in the Danish car fleet, when the number of electric cars on Danish roads overtook the number of diesel cars for the first time.

This oversupply has not come out of nowhere. The car market thus got off to a strong start in 2026, when 12,803 new passenger cars were registered in January. This corresponds to an increase of 18.2 percent compared to the same month last year. And it is precisely electric cars in particular that accounted for the majority of sales with a market share of 82.9 percent. This is stated by Mobility Denmark in a press release.

According to the industry organization, the development from last year continues with a high demand for new cars, especially electric cars. A total of 10,618 new electric cars were registered in January, which means that more than four out of five new cars ran on electricity. The high share of electricity is partly due to the fact that planned tax increases on electric cars at the turn of the year were postponed as part of the 2026 budget agreement.

- Electric cars are continuously becoming more common in Denmark, and in January we were able to mark another milestone, as there are now more electric cars than diesel cars in the Danish car fleet. The development is, among other things, a result of the fact that it is economically attractive to choose an electric car, and therefore it is very positive for the green transition that there is political will to continue to apply it. At the same time, we believe that Denmark is ready for a new car taxation model that more permanently supports green solutions,” says Mads Rørvig, CEO of Mobility Denmark.
