Professor: The government's support needs for offshore wind are set far too high

Denmark's largest offshore wind tender ended last year as a failure, as no one wanted to bid for the task of erecting the many turbines. This caused the government to change tack and they went from counting on the Danish treasury making money from the turbines to instead having to send state aid to the developers of the wind turbine projects.

Specifically, the government has proposed a support ceiling of 62 billion DKK over 20 years to realise three new offshore wind farms with a total capacity of three GW. Brian Vad Mathiesen, a professor of energy planning at Aalborg University, believes that this amount is at least three times too high. According to him, the development in electricity prices may even still make support redundant. This is reported by Børsen.

- I believe that it is largely likely that it will break even, or that there will actually be earnings from these tenders, says Brian Vad Mathiesen.
