In the future, Denmark must be extra prepared for a number of digital attacks against electricity, gas and district heating supplies. That is why the Danish Energy Agency issued a new overall strategy on Monday. The agency writes this in a press release.
The strategy focuses on how to prevent possible cyber attacks and how to ensure that Danes can receive electricity and heat if an attack occurs.
- The new strategy builds on the previous strategy, while also embracing the challenges and developments that rapid digitalization brings with it, so that security of supply can continue to be maintained, says Martin Hansen, deputy director of the Danish Energy Agency, in the press release.
He refers to a strategy that was prepared for 2019-2021. The strategy has become particularly important as a result of the green transition and the changed security situation in Europe.
Russia threatens
The latter is currently due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Because it also challenges Denmark's security of supply. This is stated by Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities Dan Jørgensen (S).
- We must be prepared to handle an increased cyber threat - including from Russia. The energy sector is a lifeline in our society, so cybersecurity must be top notch. That is why I am pleased that a new strategy is now being developed in this area. I would like to acknowledge the work of the Danish Energy Agency and the sector, he says in a press release.
The same applies to the climate target that Denmark must reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70 percent by 2030 compared to the level in 1990.
Because that means that the electricity, gas and district heating systems are also facing major changes. Among other things, due to greater digitalization of the Danish energy system and Danish society. Specifically, the new strategy contains ten overall initiatives. They are intended to set a direction for the next four years.
Among them are efforts to ensure that utility companies improve their crisis management with contingency plans. This will have an impact on how quickly the companies can return to normal operations in the event of an attack. In addition, there is a lot of work involved in monitoring threats to critical infrastructure and sharing experiences in this regard.
