On the Jutland heathland just outside Grindsted, a wind turbine has been idle for 10 years. A defective gearbox and an aging owner meant that the turbine was taken out of service. But now there is a chance that the turbine will get its blades moving again after it has been sold to a new owner with a focus on extending the lifespan of older turbines. This is reported by JV.dk.
The buyers are the couple Marianne and Just Kristensen, who through the company Just Wind operate wind turbine activities based in Stouby, 60 km east in Hedensted Municipality. They have already collected spare parts from similar turbines that they have previously dismantled, and the parts are stored in Herning. The plan is to use the existing turbine tower, put on a newly renovated hat and reuse the old blades if they are in good enough condition.
However, the project may drag on, as it requires special spare parts for the older turbine type, which is no longer in regular production. Just Wind already owns seven wind turbines in different locations in Jutland and uses external companies for maintenance.
– It's common sense. If you keep things in good condition, they can last a long time. In the past, people said that turbines could last 20 years. Then they found out that they can actually last 30 years. This turbine is 25 years old, and when it gets a ride, it can last 10, maybe 15 years, says Just Kristensen, CEO of Just Wind.
