Green electricity must secure Europe: Yet Danish offshore wind turbines are being brought to a standstill

The demand for green electricity is so low that Danish offshore wind turbines have been shut down for a fifth of the time over the summer, according to new figures from the CIP Foundation, which has compiled the figures for Finans. This also means that the production loss is four times as large as three years ago. And this has set alarm bells ringing in the green industry.

- It's crazy that we're slowing down wind turbines at a time when we're talking about freeing ourselves from imported fuels in Europe, says Kristian Jensen, CEO of the industry organization Green Power Denmark.

Peter Bjerregaard, head of regulatory affairs at the CIP Foundation, explains that the wind turbines are being stopped because there is no market for the electricity: "If demand doesn't keep up, then you have to reduce supply," he says.
