Half of the Arctic engineering graduates who are educated at DTU in Sisimiut get jobs in Greenland. DTU now wants to intensify its efforts by bringing together technical and scientific education programs to strengthen the study environment and promote local employment. Since the collaboration between DTU, the Greenland Self-Government, KTI (Tech College Greenland) and other partners began 25 years ago, 185 engineering graduates have been educated, and many have found their way to influential positions in Greenland. This is stated in a press release by DTU.

DTU notes that graduates who seek work in Greenland are often secured jobs even before completing their studies. Job opportunities are found particularly in the construction sector, public authorities, utilities and consulting engineering firms.

- Greenland has an urgent need for highly educated people in the natural sciences. Therefore, it is encouraging to see the positive progress that both KTI and DTU are facing. We are watching the development of the Centre for Arctic Technology with great interest and will continue to support this work. Access to these education programmes is crucial for our young people and the future of Greenland, says Nuka Kleemann, Head of Department of the Department of Education, Culture, Sports and Church Affairs at the Greenlandic Self-Government.

Strengthened efforts at DTU Sisimiut Campus

DTU is intensifying its efforts to educate young Greenlanders as engineers by increasing the dissemination of its activities and improving the study environment in Sisimiut. This is not only important for Greenlandic society, but also for DTU.

- Our vision is to bring together the Arctic-related education programmes within technical natural sciences in Sisimiut together with KTI and the School of Mechanical Engineering. This will help strengthen the campus, create an even better study environment and give the researchers who come here a strong starting point for their research, says Carsten Orth Gaarn-Larsen, who is Group Director of DTU's engagement in public-private partnerships in Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

Focus on Arctic specialization

DTU's Bachelor of Engineering programs in Sisimiut prepare students to contribute to Greenland's development, especially with the need for Arctic-specialized engineers. These engineers play a central role in developing a sustainable fishing industry, which accounts for over 90 percent of the of the country's exports, as well as construction projects in line with the opening of new airports and increased tourism.

In addition, there is a focus on meeting climate change in the Arctic and strengthening green transition, security and surveillance in the region.

At DTU Sisimiut Campus, programs such as Fisheries Technology and Arctic Construction and Infrastructure are offered, as well as international master's programs in Arctic Mineral Resources and Cold Climate Engineering in collaboration with universities in Sweden, Norway and Finland.

These programs provide students with engineering knowledge specializing in Arctic conditions that can be used globally. Sisimiut has about 5,500 inhabitants out of Greenland's total population of approximately 56,000.
