The Norwegian oil and energy company Equinor can continue its offshore wind project in the United States. A US court ruled on Thursday.

- We are pleased with the court's decision that Empire Wind can resume construction work. We will continue to cooperate with the authorities, says Magnus Frantzen Eidsvold, a press spokesman for the company, to the Norwegian news agency NTB.

In December, American authorities had otherwise put a stop to a total of five offshore wind projects. This applied to both the offshore wind project Empire Wind, which is part of Equinor, and Ørsted's project Revolution Wind.

The stop was justified on national security grounds. US Secretary of the Interior, Doug Burgum, has previously claimed that offshore wind farms interfere with US defense radars and warning systems.

As in Equinor's case, a judge in a federal court in Washington D.C. ruled on Monday that Ørsted must resume work on the offshore wind farm off the US east coast.  According to Equinor, the project was more than 60 percent complete when it was halted.

According to the Danish company, Ørsted's project was about 87 percent complete with 58 out of 65 wind turbines installed when the announcement of the halt from the Americans came.  The wind farm is a joint project between Ørsted and Skyborn Renewables, which is a co-owner.

The halt in December was the second time that the brakes have been pulled on the Revolution Wind project. Back in August, Ørsted and its partner were ordered to stop construction of Revolution Wind.

At that time, the order was also justified by concerns about national security. The two partners filed a lawsuit against the US government and in September received a judge's order allowing construction to continue.
