Electricity prices are determined by supply and demand. In winter, more electricity is used for heating, which increases demand and thus the price. (Archive photo).

February has seen the highest electricity prices since February 2025. This is shown by a report from the energy company Andel Energi. In February, the average price per kilowatt-hour was approximately 84.7 øre in Eastern Denmark. This is the highest level since February last year, when the average electricity price was around 88.0 øre.

Danish electricity customers in Western Denmark have also experienced high electricity prices. Here, the average price has been 71.8 øre. Andel Energi, which has made the report, is Denmark's largest energy company with over a million customers. The electricity prices are calculated without taxes and tariffs.

- A significant part of the explanation is of course that it has been a very cold month with many days of hard frost. This means that energy consumption is increasing significantly, and this is pushing prices upwards. The good news is that we are heading towards warmer times, and we also expect somewhat lower prices during March, says Josefine Walter, commercial director at Andel Energi.

Fluttering prices

In addition to the fact that electricity prices have been high, they have also been fluctuating. The most expensive day of the month was February 10, when the average price was 144 øre per kilowatt-hour. Conversely, February 21 was the cheapest day of the month, when the average price was 47 øre.

Generally, electricity prices are highest between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. This was also true in February, when the average price during this time was 120 øre per kilowatt-hour. Conversely, the cheapest hour of the day was between 4 and 5 at night, with the average price in February down to 65 øre.

- Unfortunately, it is during the off-peak hours, when private electricity customers need electricity the least, that prices are lowest - at night and during the day, says Josefine Walter.
