Energinet investigates 1GW expansion of Energiø Bornholm

The Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities has instructed Energinet to investigate options for expanding Energiø Bornholm to three GW.
15. OKT 2021 11.50

The Energiø Bornholm project may possibly become even larger than the currently planned two GW, which was decided in the Climate Agreement of 22 June 2020.

The Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities, Dan Jørgensen (S), has thus instructed Energinet to investigate the possibilities of expanding the project to three GW of offshore wind.

Energinet received the current permit to start preliminary studies in June, and is therefore already underway. With the investigation of the possibility of installing additional wind turbines, the limit for how close the offshore wind farm should be from the coast is being moved.

It is thus a prerequisite for more turbines in the area that the limit is moved to 15 km from the coast against the current 20 km.

Uncertainty about Hesselø

The reason why the studies on the possibility of a larger offshore wind farm at Bornholm are being initiated is twofold, according to Energinet.

First, experience from other offshore wind turbine projects shows that it is appropriate to pre-investigate a larger area, because parts of the areas may not be usable.

But most relevant is probably the uncertainty that has arisen around the Hesselø Offshore Wind Farm; poor soil conditions have currently made the fate of the wind farm uncertain. Therefore, an expansion of Energiø Bornholm could be an alternative if Hesselø does not come to fruition.

The order from the minister only provides the opportunity to pre-investigate the areas. It will therefore require a new political decision to use the expanded areas for the establishment of offshore wind.

In addition to offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea, the order includes feasibility studies for cable connections between the energy island and offshore wind farms, export cables to Zealand and international connections to neighboring countries, Energinet informs.
