The Danish Energy Agency has given the green light to Energinet to begin the preliminary studies at sea for the energy island and the upcoming offshore wind farms at Bornholm, which will have a capacity of 2 GW.

With the permit in place, Energinet can now send ships into the Baltic Sea to investigate and survey the seabed in the delimited preliminary study area where the two offshore wind farms can be located. The preliminary studies must also address the consequences for the environment and wildlife.

A comprehensive strategic environmental assessment (SEA) of the energy island and offshore wind farms will be made, to which the preliminary studies must contribute.

The preliminary studies must also help minimize the risk for the winners of the tender for the two offshore wind farms. With the lower risk, it can also be hoped that there will be a lower bid price from the interested installers.

The Danish Energy Agency will initiate the SEA of the Bornholm energy island and the two offshore wind farms later this year. A consultation process is expected to take place in late 2021 or early 2022.

The Danish Energy Agency gave Energinet permission to initiate the feasibility studies for the energy island in the North Sea back in April.
