The parties behind the climate agreement and thus the energy islands have agreed on where the offshore wind turbines for the energy island of Bornholm will be located, and a gross area has been chosen for the energy island in the North Sea.
- We are now entering a new era in the Danish wind adventure, and I would like to thank the other parties in the agreement for good cooperation on the location of the world's first two energy islands, says Climate Minister Dan Jørgensen (S).
At the energy island of Bornholm, the wind turbines will be located about 20 kilometers south and southwest of Rønne in two clusters.
For the North Sea, the parties have designated a gross area where preparations can begin for feasibility studies for the energy island and the associated offshore wind turbines. The offshore wind farms will be located at least 60 km from Thorsminde. The area is further out to sea than the area offered for the Thor Offshore Wind Farm.
The final location will be determined no later than next spring.
- I am pleased that we have now made a decision on where the world's first energy island will be located. It is another step in the right climate direction and absolutely necessary for us to achieve our grand visions in 2030. I look forward to making the next major decisions about the North Sea in the spring of 2021, says Radikale Venstre's climate spokesman Ruben Kidde.
The Danish Energy Agency and Energinet will now begin preparations for detailed studies of the seabed, the impact of offshore wind turbines on the environment, etc. The preliminary studies are expected to be completed in 2024.
The energy island in the North Sea will start with a capacity of 3 GW in 2030 and will later be expanded to at least 10 GW as electricity consumption increases. The energy island on Bornholm will have a capacity of 2 GW. Both energy islands will be connected to other countries.
