Growth team Bornholm wants to make the island the wind capital of the Baltic Sea

Growth Team Bornholm will take advantage of the plans to make the island the energy island of the Baltic Sea and at the same time turn the island into a large test center for green energy and a green transport hub.

It is already established that Bornholm will be one of two energy islands. So far, it is the energy island in the North Sea that has received the most attention, while the island is already ready in the Baltic Sea. This must be used to strengthen the local business community.

Back in March, the government established seven regional growth teams to provide recommendations on how best to invest in local strengths that can restart growth in the individual parts of the country. The focus for each growth team is on the special potential that can become local business lighthouses.

On Bornholm, a business lighthouse is located right next to the plans for the future energy island.

Growth Team Bornholm's recommendation is therefore that Bornholm, in addition to being an energy island, should be made a logistical and technical center for offshore wind in the Baltic Sea. The Growth Team therefore recommends that a targeted effort and a secretariat be established to make Bornholm the center and service island for future offshore wind in the Baltic Sea.

Test island, college and transport hub

In addition, the group also recommends that the energy island plans be accelerated, which should be pushed forward. In addition, the team believes that consideration should be given to establishing a smaller offshore wind farm off Bornholm, regardless of the timetable for the 2 GW offshore wind that is planned to be connected to the energy island.

In addition, the Growth Team Bornholm wants to make the island a "test island for green energy", where, among other things, a special testing and development environment will be created on Bornholm. This will be achieved, among other things, by establishing a "Residential College" for students and researchers from DTU, and by establishing a National Test Center for Green Energy.

Finally, the growth team highlights the opportunities to utilize green technologies and possible fuels to transform Bornholm into a green transport hub. Bornholm is passed annually by approximately 60,000 large ships, and within the next five to ten years this figure is estimated to increase to 80,000.

Bornholm must therefore be able to sell green fuels to Danish and international shipping in the Baltic Sea from around 2025. The production can be connected to the electricity from the offshore wind farm and scaled up when the energy island is fully implemented, suggests the Growth Team Bornholm.

The government, R, SF, EL and ALT have allocated 500 million DKK under the Finance Act from the so-called REACT-EU program to follow up on the recommendations.
