A drone center is under development and, according to current plans, could be located at Nexø Port. Several players are collaborating to explore the potential for an environment where companies with a focus on drone technology can gather. Behind the work are, among others, Offshore Center Bornholm, Business Center Bornholm, the Danish Technological Institute and Odense Robotics. They have jointly held workshops and discussed the possibilities of supporting the offshore sector with drone and sensor technology. This is reported by Bornholms Tidende.
- We are seeing a major technological development within drones – especially in the offshore wind industry. At trade fairs we have seen concrete solutions where drones transport spare parts to technicians on offshore wind turbines, instead of sending an entire ship. There are also special drones for inspecting and repairing turbine blades, writes Lone Reppien, director of Offshore Center Bornholm, about the background to why work is being done on Bornholm for a drone center.
The goal is to support Bornholm's ambitions to become a logistics and service hub for offshore wind - including a possible future Energy Island Bornholm. Nexø Harbour is in play as a physical location. Director Carsten Andersen states that the harbour can offer areas and facilities, but that it is not participating in the project itself. However, the harbour sees opportunities in being able to contribute with infrastructure and space for new activities.
Several companies with drone technologies are already active in the area, including Sensemakers and Saildrone. The players behind the project are continuing to work on identifying the market and attracting relevant companies that can contribute to and benefit from a future drone center in Nexø.
