Danish-German cooperation is a breakthrough for the energy island of Bornholm

German 50Hertz and Danish Energinet have entered into an agreement to carry out studies that will investigate before the end of the year whether it is possible and advantageous to run a cable connection between the two countries via Bornholm as a future energy island.

The agreement between German 50Hertz and Energinet is the first breakthrough in connecting the two Danish energy islands to other countries. Connections to neighboring countries are absolutely crucial for energy islands to be a good idea, both economically and for the green transition.

In the agreement, the parties have agreed to investigate the possibility of a so-called hybrid international connection via Bornholm as an energy island. A hybrid international connection can both collect wind energy from offshore wind farms and send electricity both ways between the two countries' electricity grids.

With the agreement, Bornholm as an energy island is now not only based on Danish and international political agreements, but has also become a concrete and cross-border cooperation on the energy island between the TSOs of two countries.

-If we are to succeed in the massive expansion of offshore wind, which is necessary in the coming years to fulfill the Paris climate agreement, it is absolutely crucial that a significant shift in gear now takes place. A shift from national expansion with individual wind farms to energy islands, which at their core are and can only be transnational projects.

A large majority in the Danish Parliament has entered into an ambitious agreement to place two energy islands in Danish waters by 2030. One in the North Sea and one in the Baltic Sea with Bornholm as a central hub. There are therefore less than ten years until the deadline for the construction project, which will be the largest infrastructure project in Danish history.

- We will be very busy to achieve it all by 2030, says Thomas Egebo and adds: But it is also necessary that the speed and pace of expansion be significantly increased if we in Europe are to achieve our goal of 60 GW of offshore wind in 2030 and a full 300 GW in 2050. Therefore, it is both gratifying and necessary that we have already reached the goal with the first very concrete cooperation agreement on preparations to connect the energy island of Bornholm to several countries.

The agreement also specifies that the cooperation is open to other potential partners. Thus, the energy island in the Baltic Sea can become a connection between even more countries, connect to energy markets in the Baltic countries and contribute to socio-economic welfare in Europe.
