It caused a minor shock in the wind turbine industry when, after just six months in operation, the wind turbine park Vindpark Thorup-Sletten had both the environmental report and the local plans that the municipalities of Vesthimmerland and Jammerbugt had adopted to legalize the wind farm, which is located on the border between the two municipalities, cancelled in 2021.
The cancellation was made at the request of the Planning Appeals Board, when the board upheld a complaint from the Danish Nature Conservation Association (DN). The complaint pointed out that insufficient consideration had been given to the birds harrier and bittern, which had been observed in a bird protection area located approx. 3.5 km from the turbines, but they had nevertheless been omitted from the environmental report.
Now, however, the planning basis has been put back in place, and studies have shown that the birds that DN was concerned about generally flew around or under the wings of the turbines. The new approval brings joy to Eurowind, which owns 15 of the 18 turbines in the park. Joachim Steenstrup, Head of External Affairs & Strategy at Eurowind, tells Nordjyske that further complaints will require a civil lawsuit, which is unprecedented.
- It gives us peace of mind, and now the turbines are allowed to spin around and produce green electricity for many years. It's really nice that it's all settled, says Joachim Steenstrup.
The wind farm has a capacity of 77 MW and consists of 18 turbines. Siemens SWT 130 4.3 MW wind turbines, which – when it opened in 2020 – made it Denmark's largest onshore wind farm. However, it has since been surpassed by Vindpark Overgaard, located in Randers Municipality. Vindpark Thorup-Sletten has been in full operation while the new studies have been ongoing.
