The mood for the autumn holidays was already in the air at the fish auction hall in Hvide Sande, when Ringkøbing-Skjern Mayor Hans Østergaard (V) was able to cut the ribbon and reveal one of seventeen sculptures. Those in attendance, especially the children, immediately took advantage of the opportunity to get their hands on the sculpture.
The mayor was also in no doubt that it is not only Hvide Sande that benefits from Hvide Sande Sustainability Festival 2023.
- The Sustainability Festival does something for the entire municipality, also because we in the municipality have taken the global goals to heart. We have entered into a number of climate partnership agreements with the trade council, the business community and agriculture, says Hans Østergaard, who as a Liberal has taken action in a highly topical area. And this is actually concrete action.
- Agriculture has agreed to remove some low-lying soils that will be partially submerged. It is also about using biochar as fertilizer, explains Hans Østergaard about a product that comes from pyrolysis and is also trending right now.
Even further with green energy
Green Power Denmark has previously named Ringkøbing-Skjern as Denmark's number 1 climate municipality due to the high production of renewable energy.
- We have actually come a long way, and we thought, now we don't have to go any further. But we have to because of the climate and because of the war in Ukraine and the whole security of supply. So we are ready to go even further with green energy, says the mayor, relating it to the Hvide Sande Sustainability Festival 2023:
- We are well on our way with the sustainability festival, which we in the municipality have provided funding for. It is a great program that is ready.
Community around the SDGs
The head of the SDG House in Esbjerg, Gert Barslund, has helped organize the Hvide Sande Sustainability Festival 2023. During the preparations, he has spent one day a week in Hvide Sande, and he has no doubt about what the festival can do.
- Hvide Sande is already an active city. The sustainability festival strengthens being part of a community around the SDGs. You can walk the world goal route around to the 17 different sculptures, each representing a global goal. The walk is about five km long, says Gert Barslund.
Tourists are already in Hvide Sande, but it could even make the city even more attractive.
- I also think that people might think so. I could live here, and the festival might also help people stay here, says Gert Barslund and adds:
- I hope there will be a new sustainability festival next year.
