Decision on Test Center Østerild postponed

Based on the initial environmental studies, the Danish Planning and Rural Development Agency assesses that there is a need to investigate alternative scenarios for the location of the wind turbines.

THISTED: In February last year, a majority of the parties in the Danish Parliament decided to provide more test sites for large wind turbines via an expansion of the Østerild Test Center in Thisted Municipality.

Therefore, an environmental and habitat impact assessment was initiated for the expansion, which will create space for three new test sites for wind turbines that are allowed to reach 450 meters in the air, as well as adaptation of the two northernmost current test sites. The current turbine sites are allowed for 330-meter-high wind turbines. The studies will also include the possibility of testing integration between wind turbine and PtX technology.

So far, the studies have been based on a main scenario, where the five northernmost test turbines are placed in a small bend to the east. However, based on the initial environmental studies, the Danish Planning and Rural Development Agency has assessed that there is a need to investigate alternative scenarios for locations to ensure the least possible impact on neighbours and nature. Therefore, two alternative locations will now be investigated.

According to the Minister for Urban and Rural Areas, Morten Dahlin (V), the alternative locations that are now being considered could mean that two to four fewer houses will have to be demolished as a consequence of the expansion of the test centre.

- I support investigating all options for demolishing as few homes as possible and impacting nature as little as possible. This means that we must accept a longer process. I am very aware that we are putting some people in a very difficult situation. Therefore, we are doing everything we can to ensure that this process goes as quickly as possible, so that the citizens and the local community around the test centre can get clarification. But the broad circle of parties behind the agreement on a possible expansion of the test center at Østerild can only make a final decision when the results of the studies are available, the minister says in a press release.

The new studies mean that the environmental and habitat impact assessment will be extended by two to four months, so they are now expected to be ready by mid-2026. However, the extended studies do not mean that places other than Testcenter Østerild are in play to house the new test facilities.
