US President Donald Trump's aggressive approach to offshore wind is now having consequences, as the planned Atlantic Shores wind farm off the coast of New Jersey is now set to be scrapped.
This comes after the project's developers – oil giant Shell and French energy company EDF – have asked New Jersey's energy authorities to cancel their contract to supply renewable energy.
Atlantic Shores was supposed to deliver 1.5 GW of electricity to the state, but the developers now state that the project is no longer realistic under current federal policy.
Since his return to the White House in January 2025, Trump has made offshore wind a political enemy.
On his first day as president, he signed a directive that put an end to all new leases of ocean areas for wind projects.
In January, Trump had already significantly intensified his rhetoric. On his own social media platform Truth, he warned of “a large-scale wind turbine disaster” and directed his verbal attacks directly at New Jersey.
Atlantic Shores was the only active project with a federal construction permit off the coast of New Jersey.
Its end also calls into question Governor Phil Murphy’s climate policy plans, where offshore wind has been a cornerstone of the strategy to reduce CO? emissions.
