The use of artificial intelligence is increasingly putting a strain on power grids around the world, and now Google is responding with a new type of agreement. The internet giant has entered into agreements with two American energy companies, Indiana Michigan Power and Tennessee Power Authority, to reduce power consumption in its data centers when the pressure on the power grid becomes too great. The agreements are the first of their kind with a technology giant and are intended to prevent overload by pausing unnecessary use of artificial intelligence. This is reported by Berlingske.
Agreements like these already exist in heavy industry and within cryptocurrency mining, where companies either receive payment or have their electricity bills reduced. But now Google is also ready to move traffic.
"It makes it possible to connect large electricity consumers like data centers faster, helps reduce the need to build new transmission and power plants, and helps grid operators manage electricity grids more efficiently and productively," says a statement from Google, which already directs YouTube traffic around stressed electricity grids.
